Education
The Santa Fe Vipassana Sangha sponsors a variety of classes to help our members develop and deepen their practice.
Introductory Classes
The sangha holds an introductory class on the practice of Insight Meditation many months of the year. Classes begin on the first Tuesday of the month, and run for four consecutive weeks. No prior experience is necessary, no materials are required, and there is no fee for the course.
These classes are held at the Mountain Cloud Zen Center in the Office/Library from 6:15 to 7:15 pm. After each class, students are encouraged to join the rest of the Sangha for each evening’s Dharma Talk or discussion.
To inquire about the schedule or learn more about the class contact Joan Mitchell at: trutrope32@yahoo.com, 983-2475 or Mary Powell at: madridbook@msn.com, 984-1285.
Intermediate Classes
The sangha occasionally holds an intermediate meditation class in place of the Tuesday evening introductory class. Classes begin on the first Tuesday of the month and run for four consecutive weeks. Pre-requisite for this class: an introductory class or equivalent experience in insight meditation, and commitment to daily practice for the duration of the class.
These classes are held at the Mountain Cloud Zen Center from 6:00 to 7:15pm. After each class, students are encouraged to join the rest of the Sangha for each evening’s Dharma Talk or discussion. To inquire about the schedule or learn more about the class, contact Joan Mitchell at: trutrope32@yahoo.com
Community Nights
The Buddha frequently emphasized the importance of having like-minded friends, and engaging in conversations about the Buddhist teachings. Also, many sangha members and visitors have requested opportunities to get to know others. On community nights, a sangha member provides a short presentation on a topic related to the Buddha’s teachings, and then suggests questions to encourage small group discussions. This year six discussions are planned. They will take place on the dates below after the Tuesday night meditations and in place of the usual Dharma talk.
On The Four Foundations of Mindfulness: Tuesdays, February 21 and 28. Tuesdays, April 17 and 24.
On The Four Sublime States, or Brahma Viharas related to the Eight-Fold Path: Tuesdays, August 21 and 28.

Continuing Education
In addition, we offer continuing education classes on special topics during the course of the year. These are often taught by visiting teachers.
Many of you have asked when we will begin the Continuing Education classes again. We will be resuming the classes this summer, scheduling them during months when there is no resident teacher and the Introductory Class is not being taught. Classes will meet on Tuesdays at Mountain Cloud Zen Center from 6:15 to 7:15 PM. Over a three year period we will offer many of the core Buddhist teachings from our Vipassana tradition. Then the series will be repeated.
The classes will be suitable for all levels from those new to practice to experienced students who wish to deepen their understanding. The teachings will be presented, followed by time for discussion. There will be suggested practices and reflections for the coming week.
The course will include:
The Four Noble Truths, June 5, 12, 26 >learn more
The Noble Eightfold Path
The Five Hindrances
The Four Brahma Viharas
The Three Characteristics
The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
